The minivan slowly curved around the corner. It handled nicely on this road, and I liked the car. Of course, living on my own, a minivan was a strange car for me to have. But I got it from my grandmother like everything else.

My name is Jared. I was an orphan, but I never knew my parents anyway, and I lived with my foster parents as far back as I can remember, so it doesn't really bother me much. I never really knew my grandmother either, but apparently she left me some money to take care of myself with after moving out of my stepparent's house.

Which brings me back to the minivan. About a month ago, I started looking for a job, because that inheritance wouldn't last forever, no matter how responsible I was with it. Having no friends to speak of, I didn't have much of a starting point to find a job. I didn't have a college degree either, but nonetheless I found a job opening. Some cafe needed a clerk, and I was willing to go 10 miles a day for a nice job like that. 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, it was just like high-school, only easier. A good job for a 21 year old like myself.

It was getting late, around 6:00, but the interview was strangely at 6:30, so that was okay. It made the road through the hills just a little to dark for my comfort, however. The engine was humming, the little lights on the dashboard were glowing softly, the road was straight for a few hundred yards, a large pond was ahead, and the sun was mostly set. This was kind of peaceful, if monotonous.

In fact, boredom was starting to get to me, so I was about to turn on the radio when I saw something glinting in the bushes on the side of the road. At first I didn't think anything of it, but as I drove past it something happened.

At first I felt it. Then, after a few seconds that went on for hours, I heard it. Something hit one of the front wheels on the van, and hit it very hard. A crash, a bang, a slam, all in one monstrous sound as my van went out of control. Panicking, I slammed my foot on the brakes and tried to stop the car from swerving, but whatever hit must have severed the brakelines. The car was pointed straight at the pond, the airbags exploded and pinned me to my seat, helpless. There was nothing I could do. Everything seemed to go in slow motion, and the car plowed into the pond, quickly sinking past the roof. As water began to fill the footwell, I fainted...

A truck pulled silently out of the trees. It made no noise, as electric engines don't. Two men got out of the back and waded into the pond. They were in uniform, wearing low-grade camouflage outfits, and matching beanies to cover their hair and ears, and goggles to cover their eyes, resulting in complete anonymity. On their backs they wore large black packs full of special equipment.

They waded out of the pond carrying an unconscious figure, who was dressed in jeans, tennis shoes, and an incredibly gaudy cyan polo with aqua-green stripes, covered in a maroon jacket. He was moderately tall, around 5'11, with a slightly solid build and fairy nondescript features. The man's hair was a very fair brown, nearly dirty blonde, but not quite, and it was very messy.

A third uniformed man climbed out of the cabin of the truck. "So we got someone. Now let's see if he's a keeper."

They set the man down on a stretcher. The driver took a stethoscope and some medical equipment out of his pack, and set to work. After examining the victim, he rolled up the sleeve of the windbreaker and placed a patch on the arm. "He's good. Now, Me and Gareth will take him and head back to base. Marty, you stay behind and clean up." Marty nodded.

The two men loaded the unconscious victim into the back of the truck, and took off into the surrounding woods in the vehicle. Marty took his equipment out of his pack and set to work.

In a game where the players possess great power, their powers are limited by the rules to prevent one side from dominating, and to keep the game fair. So they must have pawns, pawns of lesser power not bound by as many rules. Yet, when even these pawns are too powerful to be let loose to their full potential, they must have their own pawns. It is these pawns of pawns that decide the outcome of the game. They are the weakest, yet the most powerful of all for to them the rules do not apply.
The prelude to "A Disturbance." Probably the best of what I've written so far.
